Rethinking humanitarian aid

Emergency aid saves lives. But what needs to happen after the aid, so that people can stand on their own feet again?

Rethinking humanitarian aid

In war, displacement and disaster, a plate of food, a drink of water and a tent to shelter in save lives. This is what drives our emergency relief work.

Yet we also see that aid alone is not enough as long as the causes that leave people dependent on it remain. That is why we believe humanitarian aid needs to be rethought.

Our work in five steps

  • Emergency relief: We bring food, shelter and healthcare to people affected by war and displacement.
  • Keeping education going: We work to make sure children and adults stay in education, even in the hardest conditions.
  • Lasting development: We rebuild infrastructure and create ways for families to earn a living.
  • Leaders from within the community: We support the people who will go on to develop their own communities.
  • A future with dignity: We provide what people need to build their future through their own efforts.

The question we ask ourselves

Whatever area we work in, we ask ourselves the same question: will these people be able to stand on their own feet tomorrow?
