Located in the centre of Atme, Syria, the Abna Ashaam School is far more than a school: it is a complex offering a wide range of services. Despite the hardships of war, the complex has carried on its work with great determination and has become a source of hope for the children and families of the area.
The Complex and Its Services
As a multi-purpose complex, the Abna Ashaam School brings together a number of units:
- Administration Building: The main hub that organises the running of the school.
- Logistics Centre: The support unit that meets all the complex’s needs.
- Security: The units that keep the complex safe.
- Nursery and Kindergarten: A dedicated team of 10 works in the kindergarten and a team of 5 in the nursery. With around 100 children learning here, these classrooms are an investment in the area’s future.
- Girls’ and Boys’ Primary School: Offers quality education across 18 classes, in groups of 20.
- Ertugrul Ghazi Riding Club: Home to 25 thoroughbred and champion racehorses, the club organises social and sporting activities for local children and orphans. The club also aims to ease the trauma of war, and many children have learned to ride here.
- Indoor and Outdoor Sports Halls: Dedicated spaces for sport that support students’ physical and emotional development.
- Scout Club: A social platform created for orphans and other students.
- Water Well and Tank: A well and tank meet the complex’s water needs, and water and electricity are available at all times.
A Universal Approach to Education
The Abna Ashaam School was founded in the hardest conditions of the war, as an education story that began in tents. Opened in 2015, the school follows a universal, accredited curriculum. Today it is regarded as one of the finest and most modern schools in the area.
- Teaching Staff: Some of the very best teachers work at the school, having stayed with education and their country despite all the hardships of the war.
- Number of Teachers: 14.
- Students at Stage One: 126.
- Girls at Stage Two: 95.
- Boys at Stage Two: 146.
- Total Number of Classrooms: 20.
- Total Number of Class Sections: 18.
Many displaced children and orphans study at the school. As far as resources allow, these students receive psychological support, education grants, stationery, meals and clothing.
Graduation and Continuity in Education
The Abna Ashaam School celebrated its first graduates in 2018. Classes are planned with an average of 20 students, so that both teachers and students benefit from individual attention. Around 100 children attend the kindergarten.
Infrastructure and Support
All infrastructure and building work on the complex was carried out by IQRA, and the land belongs to the school itself. The complex supports many other schools in the surrounding area and serves as a model for the region.
Social and Sporting Activities
Alongside education, the complex also provides social and sporting activities. The Ertugrul Ghazi Riding Club keeps some of the finest horses in the area and holds races. Events organised for orphaned children also build solidarity and bring people together. Aiming to heal the trauma of war, the club has taught many children to ride. The indoor and outdoor sports halls also allow students to build their strength through physical activity and lift their spirits.
Conclusion
Despite the devastation of the war, the Abna Ashaam School remains a doorway of hope in education and community life. Through its services for children and orphans, it has become a symbol of solidarity and achievement in the area. With its universal curriculum, social projects and sporting activities, it continues to stand out as one of the region’s most important centres of learning.
